We're excited to welcome Paula to The DataFace as a senior designer, and to mark the occasion, we're turning this edition over to her favorites.


Paula was most recently at POLITICO, where she worked on visual stories about election results, campaign finance and food policy. Before that, she worked at The San Francisco Chronicle and WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Paula brings a journalistic eye to her work and her picks reflect public service storytelling, a sharp eye for detail, and a sense of fun. It's a list with real range, spanning decades and formats, held together by curiosity.

The New York Times’s Who Gets to Breathe Clean Air in New Delhi?



This piece follows two children throughout their days in New Delhi, while measuring their exposure to air pollution. Only one of their families can afford an air purifier, and this piece weaves together visuals to document that disparity. You watch Monu and Aamya side by side – brushing their hair, attending school, cooking dinner – overlaid with the levels of pollution in their surroundings. It’s such a powerful story because there are no superfluous elements – the video, data visualizations and text all play an important role.

Washington Post’s Weather Forecast Accuracy



I think about this piece at least once a day because I live in an unpredictable weather region. I’m constantly explaining to friends and neighbors that we can’t actually trust the forecast until we’re looking at tomorrow’s, and that that’s not the case everywhere. The forecast in the middle of the U.S. is less predictable than the coasts because that’s where big air masses mix. This explanation of the complexities of forecasting is worth revisiting as experts question how reliable future forecasts will be.

Day Lane’s The Hydrant Directory



This website creates color schemes from fire hydrants in NYC (and a few in other cities!). Each hydrant is 3D scanned to showcase art created by residents who paint these everyday objects. Filtering by color or height creates gorgeous collections that surprise and delight. Plus, there’s this anthropomorphic charm to the hydrants that I love.

Explore related articles on Wikipedia by diving into images. Watch the collection on your screen converge into sameness, and then pull yourself in a different direction. You can probably tell I’m a sucker for cutouts.

The Pudding’s Music Borders


This one is from so long ago, but it’s just one of my favorite projects! It’s a map of the top streamed music on Youtube. The more you zoom in to explore, the more you’ll find smaller artists or regional quirks. And panning across countries you can both hear cultural differences and see artists like BTS dominate no matter where you are. The serendipity and fun factors are what keep it in my list of references.

We hired Paula, who you’ve probably realized is not only a skilled data storyteller, but also a board game enthusiast. Caverna, with all its twists and complexities, is her favorite. 


Our Storytelling Studio is continuing to produce impactful data stories for clients. For Faire, we dug deep into candy trends, including why retro candy is taking the country by storm, and how Taylor Swift's wedding is reshaping what wedding retailers stock. For Instacart, we mapped what Americans buy for the Fourth of July, from the hot dog vs. hamburger bun divide to the chip brands that dominate each state. More is in the works.
