Hi friends,

Over the years, for those of us who care deeply about how data meets design, Data&Eggs became a small ritual. Across 288 editions, the newsletter explored charts, visual stories, clever interactions, and the craft behind them.


After a hiatus, we're relaunching with fresh energy and a slightly bigger ambition.


The data visualization space is evolving rapidly: AI has made practitioners faster and more capable, but it has also flooded the world with noise. Audience expectations are higher, and the bar for meaningful storytelling keeps rising.


We felt practitioners needed more than just links dropped into an inbox. They needed a living resource to revisit ideas, and see what standout data storytelling looks like across journalism, brands, art, and beyond.


So we built a proper home for it:

Data&Eggs is now a growing, searchable repository of great information design, visualizations and interactives. Our vision is to be a resource for the data storytelling community. It’s a place you can return to when you need inspiration, or when you need to be reminded of what good looks like.


Every month, we’ll reflect on a theme in data visualization and storytelling. We’ll point at trends we’re noticing, highlight sharp examples, and share what we’re learning in practice.

 

This edition’s theme: Variety.


Data storytelling is expanding in both form and ambition as more disciplines make it their own. Today brands are building narrative experiences from their data, artists are turning datasets into immersive works, and game studios are weaving research directly into play. The medium has grown into something far more expansive, a way to reach audiences that is participatory, expressive, and increasingly woven into culture itself.

Searching for Birds


If you’ve ever been curious about birding but didn’t know where to begin, this feels like the gentlest possible invitation in. Nadieh Bremer and Emily Barone transform Google Trends data into an experience that feels weightless and immersive. Familiar charts and maps dissolve into delicate eggs, small moments of delight tucked into the journey.

You don’t read it so much as wander through it. It unfolds like a novel moving between data visual, information design, and something closer to meditation. It reminds you that data, in the right hands, can do more than inform. It can move you.

America Isn’t Exceptional. It’s the Exception.


Amanda Shendruk compares the United States with peer nations across a series of charts on healthcare, incarceration, work, and social policy, where the U.S. repeatedly stands out as an outlier.

Comparison after comparison shows the same pattern: the country spends far more on healthcare but has lower life expectancy, incarcerates far more people per capita than other developed nations, and is alone among OECD countries in not guaranteeing paid leave for new parents, alongside higher childcare costs and more mass shootings. At a moment when national identity is loudly asserted and debated, the piece places the United States within a broader global context and invites reflection grounded in evidence. Federal Agents in Minnesota Could Outnumber Twin Cities Police


This circular waffle chart captured national attention after an ICE officer fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis, sparking protests and intense scrutiny of federal enforcement tactics.

The graphic compares a potential 3,000 federal agents from ICE and CBP with local police forces, showing a presence about five times the size of the Minneapolis Police Department and roughly equal to the combined sworn officers across the region’s ten largest law enforcement agencies. By placing those numbers side by side, the chart turns an abstract debate about federal enforcement into a clear sense of scale.

What Is Missing?


The website layers maps, timelines, species stories, photography, film, and sound into a richly multimedia experience about biodiversity loss. Elegant transitions carry you across scales and formats: a rotating sphere dissolves into a timeline, while archival photos and videos surface throughout the experience. Created by Maya Lin, the artist and architect behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the project blends data, landscape, and storytelling to make the scale of the planet’s biodiversity crisis visible and deeply felt.

Video Games and Mental Health


This piece invites you to experience the research rather than just read about it. Built around findings that cozy video games can support mental health, the interactive mirrors the mechanics it describes as you move through a calm environment, are offered a blanket, and even prompted to take a photo of your garden. In doing so, the storytelling demonstrates the effect it’s reporting on, blurring the line between journalism and participation in a way that feels both thoughtful and persuasive.
