A picture is worth a thousand words, but an experience is worth a thousand pictures. When you try to navigate the Texas abortion maze and it takes four minutes, then flip to California and it takes thirty seconds, the disparity becomes something you've briefly lived. The promise of an interactive game is to have someone experience, feel and understand a concept that’s alien to them. Games can personalize, inform, and push a reader to inhabit someone else's circumstances and compel them to reflect and care. This issue is five of our favorites from newsrooms and brands that get it right.

The Pudding’s The United States of Abortion Mazes


The Pudding scored abortion policy data across 28 variables for all 51 states and used that score to generate a maze for each one. Waiting periods, gestational limits, provider restrictions, Medicaid coverage, parental consent requirements feed the algorithm. The denser the restrictions, the denser the maze. Texas generates something close to unsolvable. California opens up in under a minute. You're reading about the policy gap but also feeling it in your head and hands. Abortion is striking as a subject because the post-Dobbs variance between states is so extreme, but the template transfers to any policy landscape where geography determines what's possible for you.

This tracker, built on Bright Data's web-scraped price data, lets you search specific grocery items and see how prices have shifted over time. You walk into a grocery store feeling like everything costs more. This piece validates something the reader already feels is true with concrete answers to the question “by how much” with precision.

ProPublica’s The Waiting Game


This one will take a lot of patience to play and it’ll drain you. But that’s the whole point of this exercise. ProPublica and Playmatics drop you into the asylum process as one of five real people: a domestic violence survivor from El Salvador, a student protester from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a Tibetan man facing discrimination in Nepal, among others. You only have to experience a sliver of what they experience: the waiting, the uncertainty, the paperwork that begets more paperwork. By the time you reach a decision on the case, you’re so invested in the case that the outcome becomes personal. The best news games force a player to reflect, walk a mile in another person’s shoes and empathize with their experience.

Brands can build games too. Price Adapter puts you in the role of a merchant setting prices across countries, scored on how well you adapt to each market. Before playing it, most people outside fintech wouldn't know adaptive pricing existed. Afterwards, you'll have opinions about it. A game makes a complex concept easily digestible and fun.

WaPo’s Redistricting Mini Golf


Congressional districts are shapes, so Dylan Moriarty and Joe Fox at The Washington Post made them into mini golf holes. Nine holes, each a real congressional district shaped by how gerrymandered it is, meaning the more politicians have twisted district boundaries to favor their party, the more contorted the shape. The more contorted the shape, the more unplayable the hole. The design carries the game: the retro aesthetic, the score card, the physics of the ball against those angular walls. By the time you've tried to navigate Maryland's 3rd, you understand gerrymandering in a way no standard explainer could produce.

The DataFace



It's going to be a busy summer, because our Storytelling Studio is officially up and running with three, amazing pilot clients. One has us analyzing and visualizing survey data; two others have us building internal data storytelling functions from scratch, pitching ideas, mining insights, and crafting monthly stories. If you've been curious about what that kind of engagement looks like, we'd love to talk.


We’ve also pushed several big projects out the door this spring. We helped TAAF launch the STAATUS Index 2026, the sixth edition of their annual study on how Americans perceive AAPI communities. We also developed the Health Cost Landscape for the Health Care Cost Institute and worked on Vital City’s Historical Crime Explorer, which was featured at NYC Open Data Week back in March.
